My fiancé and I did long distance for eight months between New York and Lisbon. The first three months nearly broke us.
What saved us was structure—daily video calls at the same time, shared Netflix watch nights, and sending surprise gifts. But the biggest lesson: stop counting the days apart; start creating moments together, even virtually.
We also fought, a lot. Mostly because of time zones and insecurities. Once we both admitted we were scared, everything softened.
We closed the distance this summer, and it was worth every lonely night. The best advice I can give: if you both keep choosing each other even when it’s hard, that’s love.
