The biggest challenge now is geopolitics and communication barriers. Some sites overcharge for translations and “virtual gifts.” Avoid those.
But if you find a reputable site with verified members and direct messaging, it’s still possible.
I met a woman from Novosibirsk in 2021. We talked for months, then the war made travel difficult. We still video chat every week.
